Zika Forest, located in Kisubi along Entebbe Road, Uganda, is a serene retreat just 23 kilometers from Kampala. This lush forest features mature trees, diverse vegetation, and is home to wildlife species, making it a perfect destination for nature enthusiasts.
Named after the Zika Virus discovered there in 1947, “Zika” means “overgrown” in Luganda, highlighting its dense cover. Visitors can enjoy picnics and corporate retreats, escaping the hustle and bustle of Entebbe and Kampala. The forest is valuable for educational purposes and offers leisure activities, particularly for those interested in the local ecosystem.
Zika Forest, also recognized by former President J. Carter during his birding safari, is conveniently located near Entebbe International Airport. Wildlife such as crocodiles, snakes, leopards, monkeys, and various plant species thrive in its swampy terrain. Though small, it offers ample adventure with a variety of plant species and birding opportunities.
Upon arrival at Entebbe International Airport, you will meet our tour guide for a briefing before heading to Zika Forest reserve. If you’re in Kampala, we will pick you up from your hotel or designated station for the approximately 1-hour drive to Zika Forest in Kisubi Town.
Next, you’ll travel to Lake Victoria for a 45-minute boat ride to Ngamba Island. At the sanctuary, a briefing will introduce you to various activities, including observing the chimpanzees being fed and the chance to participate in feeding your favorite chimp.
After exploring the different areas of the sanctuary, including the food store and chimp clinic, you’ll have lunch at the sanctuary. This will be followed by a visit to a nearby fishing village, where you can interact with locals and participate in fishing.
In the evening, the return journey to Entebbe includes a stop at the equator, with an opportunity for proficient swimmers to swim in Lake Victoria. Your trip will conclude with a drop-off in Kampala city or Entebbe, perfect for those with late flights.
